Breast cancer surgery can be a deeply traumatic experience. You may feel that your breasts are very important to your idea of yourself as a woman. Many women have conflicting emotions, such as grief, fear, shock, anger and resentment. All patients are given the opportunity to discuss their concerns about surgery with a Plastic Surgeon and a Breast Reconstruction Nurse.
Initial Consultation
During an initial consultation with your plastic surgeon you will be given the opportunity to discuss your surgery. Although the Plastic Surgeon will explain what the surgery entails, it can be difficult to absorb all the relevant information at one visit, therefore you will also be offered the chance to a speak to a specialist nurse to go over any concerns or questions you might have.
Meeting a Breast Reconstruction Nurse
Your Breast Reconstruction Nurse will give you the opportunity to discuss your pre and post operative care. She will help you understand and consider the options open to you, learn what the surgery entails and what support is available to you after surgery. Some patients, for whom the need for surgery is urgent, have only a short period of time in which to decide on what procedure is best for them.
The nurse will explain what items you will need to bring into hospital for your stay and will give you the chance to ask any additional questions you may have.
You may be invited to attend a BRA (Breast Reconstruction Awareness) meeting. These meetings provide an opportunity for you to meet and talk to other women who have already been through the experience.
