50 years of St Andrews

St Andrews takes its name from the hospital in Billericay where the burns and plastics unit was originally located. These units opened in May 1973. By the early 1990s the hospital buildings were in need of extensive redevelopment and in 1995 St Andrews Centre become part of the Mid Essex Hospital Services NHS Trust. Shortly afterwards, St Andrews transferred to its current quarters at Broomfield Hospital.

St Andrews has a proud history of developing world class services to our local population and also to patients from around the UK and from overseas. We have over the years pioneered cutting edge treatments, trained colleagues from around the world, been one of the largest training units in the UK and have been at the forefront of innovation and clinical research.

Over a two-day event St Andrews celebrated the history of the unit and the people who have worked and trained here over the past 50 years. It also explored how Plastic Surgery has evolved over this period, and the contribution of St Andrews and its alumni to advancing the specialty.
